Serenity: Characterization

Captain Mal Reynolds and angelic killing-machine River Tam are dynamic characters in the movie Serenity. I do not think it is possible to look at these two characters separately, because each exists to repair the damage of the other. He struggles to live outside the reach of the oppressive government he fought against in a failed rebellion. It is a difficult task because his crew makes a living smuggling between planets and harbors two fugitives. His disenchantment with rebellion cannot hide the anger seething beneath, or the good in his heart.

The girl, River, is a child genius on the run from government experiments that gave her physical strength and psychic abilities. She is unable to control many of her disturbing behaviors because of the torture and the government secret that is tearing apart her psyche. When she reveals it, Mal must choose between keeping his head low and risking his crew and his ship to broadcast the truth. He initially decides to take his crew into hiding, until the enemy systematically slaughters everyone they could depend on. Left without an alternative, Mal finally lets his sense of justice meet his rage, and he leads his crew on their bloody mission. The experience is cleansing for River’s mind, redemptive for Mal, and the movie ends on a tentatively positive note.

The sky isn’t evil. Try looking up.

For the love of humanity, read the entire post on Whedonesque from Joss Whedon. Yeah, you think he's just a tv guy. Just read it.

Here's a blurb:

"I have yet to find a culture that doesn’t buy into it. Women’s inferiority – in fact, their malevolence -- is as ingrained in American popular culture as it is anywhere they’re sporting burkhas. I find it in movies, I hear it in the jokes of colleagues, I see it plastered on billboards, and not just the ones for horror movies. Women are weak. Women are manipulative. Women are somehow morally unfinished. (Objectification: another tangential rant avoided.) And the logical extension of this line of thinking is that women are, at the very least, expendable."

Now I owe Manders $100

Manders: btw, I LOVE Enterprise
Manders: just watched 3 eps
Relic: lol!
Relic: i watched the last 2, just now
Relic: michael HATES the intro
Manders: I was so irritated they left off there
Manders: humph
Manders: the music is kinda hokey, reminds me of Firefly just a little
Relic: and i keep missing episodes so i have no idea what ever happened with the Xindi
Manders: Well I'm totally lost
Manders: lol
Relic: its a good song, and a good intro, if it wasn't for trek, it just doesnt fit
Manders: were those the engineered humans?
Relic: and the trek seasons are like $90 each
Manders: Yet another reason for me to join the masses of Netflixers
Relic: Xindi? no, its a race that had like 5 different varieties
Manders: ah
Relic: not even sure if im spelling it right
Manders: well I about freaked when I saw the guy that played Data on Enterprise
Relic: wait, what?
Manders: he basically played his creators predecessor
Relic: when was this?!
Manders: He was some Dr. who had engineered some people, those people went bad...
Manders: something about advanced ability leading to advanced ambition
Relic: in the episode i didnt watch tonight?
Manders: anyway at the end he's in a cell and starts talking about cybernetic lifeforms and how it may be worked out in a few generations from his
Manders: it was the first one I caught tonight
Relic: yeah
Manders: I watched something on the history channel last night about Trek
Manders: I can't believe NGen is 20 yrs old
Manders: wow
Relic: lol
Relic: yeah, that makes us feel old
Manders: they had a really cool special on about Star Wars tonight, explaining all the archetypes etc.
Manders: I felt all happy fangirl nerdy
Relic: michael was watching that when i woke up from my nap
Relic: michael just told me there is a "mod" for WoW that makes the player spout Firefly lines
Relic: he was excited
Manders: I love that nerds are so incestuous in their worship of all things SciFi
Manders: lol
Relic: i'm keeping that line.
Manders: *rakes in royalties*

Kaylee: Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries.
Mal: Oh, God, I can't know that!
Jayne: I could stand to hear a little more.

Wash: Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?
Zo: Either blow us all up or rub soup in her hair. It's a toss-up.
Wash: I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it.

Zoe: "Preacher, don't the bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin'."
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

Zoe: They'll rape us till were dead, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into there clothing. And if were very very lucky they'll do it in just that order.

Mal: Well look at this. 'Pears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir.
Mal: Ain't we just.

Kaylee: Wash, tell me I'm pretty.
Wash: Were I unwed, Id take you in a manly fashion.
Kaylee: 'Cause im pretty?
Wash: 'Cause you're pretty...

Had to take out the videos. I'll figure it out later. They're still embedded in the myspace post, which you an get to through the Serenity banner on my profile.

Slither? Eh, no.

Robert (an uber-fan of my glorious blogs) was asking if I have, or will be, watching the new movie Slither. I try to stay away from just those sorts of films. Which one was it where the bloody things spewed out of people's butts? I swear people were crap-birthing these nasty aliens. Something about dream catchers I think. Michael remembers. Only this Slither thing looks like it really wants to be a B-Movie.

I'm still hanging out in Florida for a couple more months. I can't wait to get back to the hubby in TX. Ugh! I can't believe I want to go back to Texass.

I should really be asleep about now, in preparation for a long day walking around the Kennedy Space Center tomorrow. I'm kinda excited again, we'll see. I've spent my entire day today reading Absolution Gap, and I've only got...lets see...87 pages to go. It's been ages since it has taken me this long to read a book. I started it in January I think. I guess its just a point of pride for me to finish it before I go to bed tonight. I used to read entire 800 page novels in a day, often starting at 8am and finishing at 4am....which in my reckoning is a day since its less than 24 hours, so piss off :P

I am sitting rather awkwardly with my legs crossed and my laptop on my lap. Where else? Anyway my left foot is asleep, and I'm dreading the period of waking-up that follows. TTYL.

OK, there goes the foot....OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I'm Human After All

The four of us ladies in the office went to the mall today after work. I had such a blast! I spent most of my $200. I actually bought 6 shirts, and they are so cute. One at Lane Bryant (thanks manders!) and the others at another very awesome store. I'm wearing one shirt now, a button up red with white pinstripes (I think that's what they're called), fitted very nicely and doesn't make my big belly obvious. Also bought a pair of shoes at Payless and a perfume at Victoria's Secret. It smells ssoooo yummy and fruity without killing my nasal passages. Oh yeah, I also bought the Serenity soundtrack. Ohh ohh must insert cd into computer...brb...k. Ahhhh.....

Did you hear me!? I had a blast, buying clothes, spending money. I can't stand perfumes, and I bought a perfume. Holy shit I am a real person after all. And the mall is sickeningly close to my apartment. It's all over now.

Oh, and my laptop is breaking, the cracks on the hinges are enormous. I may have to spend my bonus pay early. So if you don't hear from me all the sudden, or Michael if the bank account suddenly loses $1200...you know what's going on.

And 12 hour shifts are over for now, thank goodness. AND I have tomorrow and Monday off, since I had to work this morning. I picture laziness in my future.

New Year 2006

Original: December 31, 2005 - Saturday
We have absolutely nothing to do for tonight.
This New Year's Eve is gonna suck.
I'm pretty boring.

To Which Chloe Commented:
We have no plans yet either, except to drink a bottle of wine (Fat Bastard Shiraz) that was sent by Craig's brother. I think we will go to a bar of some sort. Maybe a gay bar, although I hesitate, because Craig's so damn pretty that I'll be fighting middle-aged queens off all night. In any event, even if we stay in, I'm dressing up to the 9's, and that's what I suggest to you. Look fabulous. That's the best way to begin the New Year, no matter where you are!

These seemed to go together:
Original: December 31, 2005 - Saturday

I would dress up like Chloe suggested but, eh, Michael wouldn't play along and I'm in a pretty grumpy mood at the moment. We just spent some time driving around this crappy town looking for something to do. We think everyone is either at Graham's Central Station (never ever stooping that low) or at private parties. So we ate at IHOP, chilled out at Hastings for a bit (bought the Firefly soundtrack), picked up some booooozzzzeee, and now we're home watching the ball drop on tv in about an hour.
Considering all the crap that happened this year, and how utterly worthless the year has been as far as progressing in anything that matters to me or doing anything fun, I'm just ready for it all to be over and start anew. Beyond selfishness, the rest of the world has had a pretty (can I say crap again? well I'm gonna) crappy time of it too. If I could erase this year I would.

So, my resolution for the year? Do something I can care about, that holds some damn meaning for me, and have a damn life for once.

Oh, the Barnaked Ladies are on CNN singing "It's all been done" I love that song, it feels so right.
