Memorization Help Please

I am having a bit of trouble memorizing Polyatomic Ions. I've been trying flashcards. I can guess the formula from the name most of the time, but getting the name from the formula isn't happening. Is there a trick out there, or is it really as hard as it seems?

Thanks for listening :)

In some cases these forms don't all exist, so you have to know the series already to some extent.

Also, if you have a few molecules in your head already, then you can remember the charge. For example, H2SO4 is sulfuric acid. I always remember SO4 is -2 because of the two hydrogens.

Part of the trick is to treat this as a language in that you have to get to listening for what sounds natural much like matching the appropriately gendered article to an ambiguous word in German or French.

*I don't have my irregular plurals memorized yet, and I've been speaking English all my life.

That's a great way of looking at it, as learning a language. I think I'm starting to get the hang of some of them just because I've heard/read them several times before. I thank science fiction writers and scienceblogs.com for making it really easy for me to memorize most of the element names and symbols already.

You poor thing...

This site addresses your problem, it even sympathizes with you about memorizing the dreadful things. Good luck!

I think this site is exactly what I need, thank you so much. Isn't this the cold hard truth:

"First year students are often asked to memorize lists of polyatomic ions without any context. Mnemonics can be helpful, but they provide an artificial way to organizing what must be memorized. This beginner's guide to polyatomic ions will eventually provide a relevant context for students learning the names and formulas of polyatomic ions"

Mnemonics never work for me because it seems like more work to memorize the mnemonic than the actual information. I swear the only thing I ever learned by mnemonics was the order of the planets, and now that's all messed up with the whole Pluto thing. Nachos I guess it is now.

Thanks to you both.

Anal-ytics

When I put up the new site, I also started using Google Analytics. Hey, if I am going to talk to myself, I would at least like to be aware of the fact nobody is listening. It was making me sad though, that nobody even checked me out, followed the links I put for you. Ungrateful little bastiges. And I cried a little e-tear, until I realized I've seen Hubby check it at least twice in the last few days, and I've checked it too obviously there's no filter set at all so I should have seen about 4 hits a day. But no. So I checked out with GA, and it says it's getting data, bla bla bla [this long post is me avoiding studying, can't you tell?] bla... but I decided not to believe it and checked the code on blogger, and there's nothing, so I put it back. Wonder how that happened?

Anywhoo...its getting awful lonely without you folks talking to me, and I need your e-love to get me through the day...*shiny puppy-eyes*

I am now very tired, and I have spent the entire day on my butt. This is post #75 on the new site. I picked up every slightly meaningful post from 30 Nov 2005 to 31 Mar 06, which is where I previously left off saving links.

Good Wholesome Fun *with pictures

I'm patiently waiting for my videos (on myspace) to upload. Patiently, I swear. Anyway, we had a pretty good weekend, despite the sudden reappearance of winter cancelling the Cavern plans. We did some shopping for today, metal kabab sticks, peep bunnies, hershey bar, graham crackers. See, the problem with peeps is that they are disgusting little freaks of nature. And I hate them.

Plain marshmallow is nasty enough, and is fit to eat only after covered in a thick black crust. Peeps earn no extra love, so they too meet the fire. Law of Marshmallow Nature. Unfortunately, it seems today's peeps are less flammable than I remember, and much less flammable than plain puffs. Odd. The dye must provide some fireproofing protection. Probably causes cancer too. Nasty nasty little beasties. I'm still uploading a few videos of their last moments. It really is moving. And classy.

And I'm out of patience, so I'm posting this without the videos embedded. Just go to my videos and watch them in this order:

Mal: Oh, God, I can't know that!
Jayne: I could stand to hear a little more.

Wash: Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?
Zo: Either blow us all up or rub soup in her hair. It's a toss-up.
Wash: I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it.

Zoe: "Preacher, don't the bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin'."
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

Zoe: They'll rape us till were dead, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into there clothing. And if were very very lucky they'll do it in just that order.

Mal: Well look at this. 'Pears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir.
Mal: Ain't we just.

Kaylee: Wash, tell me I'm pretty.
Wash: Were I unwed, Id take you in a manly fashion.
Kaylee: 'Cause im pretty?
Wash: 'Cause you're pretty...

Had to take out the videos. I'll figure it out later. They're still embedded in the myspace post, which you an get to through the Serenity banner on my profile.

New Old Friend!!!

This is what I love about myspace. I've lost touch with quite a few great friends from HS. I'm bad about writing (and mailing) actual letters, and I hate how I sound on the phone (like an idiot). So I am really happy just now because my friend Becky found me!

NEW OLD FRIEND, YAY!

In any case, it is way past my bedtime. I have to be in a pass & review tomorrow morning and I'm not looking forward to it. I have the wrong hat, because who keeps a flight cap when you have a busdriver hat that doesn't fall off? I have the 'wrong' shirt, because who bothers tucking when you have princess cut, and who the heck cares what's under the jacket anyways? I spent a bunch of cash on 2 whole new ribbon racks today, and cut my finger on a ribbon. What a waste. Who would've thought I needed any of those items anymore? Tomorrow was supposed to be my last work day, but paperwork is holding me back. Yesterday was not a good day, when I found that out.

We are all Heartless Bitches

I just got this bulleting in myspace:

Ladies always bitch and bitch to their friends that there is never any good guys out there anymore, and they always end up with assholes who treat them bad. Well ladies next time your bitching, maybe look up to see who your bitching too, maybe that special someone is right there hanging on your every word like usual, screaming in his head "why don't you give me a try?"
Because the person you are usually searching for is right by you. *And yadayadayada...

My Response:
Nothing against the person I last got this post from, just this kind of post in general. Most women I know do not have or want the 'bad guy' but most men aren't this pure 'good guy' they claim to be. I love my man, even though he's not some perfect gentleman. I wouldn't want him to act like someone he is not.

This site is fun, check it out:
http://www.heartless-bitches.com/ngc/ngi-1.shtml
But why are "nice guys" misogynists? In the book "The Gift of Fear," Gavin DeBecker defines "niceness" as a "strategy of social interaction" and not evidence of innate goodness. So what he is saying is that being "nice" merely means your behavior is not offensive but does not mean your motives are automatically pure or good. Being a "nice guy" has been discussed elsewhere so there is no need to go into great detail here, but the bottom line is that trying to "be nice" or to use one's social charm to achieve one's social or sexual objectives is just as manipulative as anything else. The details are different, but what is at the core is the same.

Water and rent, the only ones I have to remember, everything else is automated.

Dinner never seems romantic, even when we try to make it a romantic dinner. We're still the same two people, we would have the same conversation... plus the romantic stuff is less pleasant after a big meal.

3. Last time you puked from drinking?
I don't think I have, maybe burped and felt a little yuck, but not actually puking I think.

Curiosity Hurts

Okay, don't ask why. I was trying to figure out why, for crying out loud, is our state motto Show Me? I mean, it just sounds wrong. So, whatever, I look it up. Some senator who was all about common sense and seeing proof of whatever. Unimportant. Then I get really stupid, I look up "Missouri" in myspace music. Why? Don't ask. Just don't...

The stars.

Do you like to have your neck kissed?
Well duh!

Do you want a baby?
Yeah, but lets not talk about it. Because not talking about it is easier than living a real life.

You believe in divorce?
Well it happens all the time, so it must exist, what a dumb question. Seriously though, it depends on what your relationship has become whether to try and save it or start fresh.

Tell me can spare some..

Ok, I got the lyrics a little wrong, so check out the difference, but I'm not going to change them here. I went out to the band's page and wow! Ardency Rue and Ardency Rue Site Lyrics

its no wonder, the things i did
the things you said, were running through my head

So far away, where have you been?
who have you told, and what did they say?

for rare occasions i have seen your face
i am blown away to the time and place
when i held you close and you touched my hand
and i could take that place in time

if i told the truth?

would you take a chance?

its no wonder the things you did
things i said were running through your head

rare occasions when i see your face
i am blown away to the time and place
when i held you close and you touched my hand
and i could take that place in time

baby i just need a little love
well tell me can you say so
baby i just need a little love

rare occasions when i see your face
i am blown away to the time and place
when i held you close and you touched my hand
and i could take that place in time

i could take that

baby i just need a little love
can you say so
lemme hear you say so

the best i can tell on the lyrics to my profile song, which i keep playing over and over and over and overand over and over and overand over and over and overand over and over and overand over and over and over baby i jus t need a little love...lemme hear you say so...

VAIO pt2

Do I have nothing better to do at 5am? Probably not. Note: My alarm usually goes off at 4am. Why am I still awake? NEW COMPUTER

Ok, so I switched over to gmail, so if you didn't get a message from me I don't like you anymore. Kidding. I'm not going to broadcast my email address here, so if you really didnt get a message from me then you'll have to guess what my new address on gmail is , not kidding.

Mmmmm the specs on my new computer:

VAIO FS Series
Intel Centrino Mobile Technology 1.73Ghz
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
15.4" Wide WXGA 1280x800 display
DVD R Double Layer with DVDRW2
523MB RAM and 100GB4 hard drive
3 USB, and one of those flash memory things for the camera! (the technical term of course)
Integrated Wireless (and faster!)

Might not seem all that great to you, but I was mucking along with this for the last 3 1/2 years:

Compaq Presario 900 PP2140
AMD Athalon 1.3Ghz
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
14.1 Inch Display, AND DARK DARK DARK
DVD/CD Player
523MB RAM (because I upgraded about 2 years ago)
80GB Hard Drive
2USB, Floppy (I'm gonna miss that)

I havn't reinstalled any of my old software, or the new Photo Impact Pro, which I also bought today. I really need Firefox back before I hurt someone at Microsoft. I might do that anyway if I don't get rid of all this default 'helpful' crap on the new system. Also, I am apparently crippled without my Favorites, and I forgot to move them over. OMFG I am my own annoying END USER! Save me from myself!

c'mon I just need my link to imageshack..

Reviving a dead mouse.

Some days I can't stand mice. Not the squeaky ones that leave droppings everywhere, but the round ones with buttons.
There are these devices for people who use more than one computer and only one Keyboard Monitor(Video) and Mouse. It's called a KVM Switch. It is the root of all my misery on a daily basis.

It supports PS2 mice and keyboards, which tend to crap out and stop working if they are unplugged or the power spikes or if you happened to look at your computer funny. This should be easy to fix, just restart your system and the mouse and/or keyboard should start working again. A monkey could do my job.

But no, restarting won't work most of the time, because the KVM does not have its own power source, it draws power from the keyboard's connection to the computer. Weird? Yes. So even when you shut down one computer the other ones connected to the KVM will still provide it with power. EVERYTHING MUST BE OFF SO THERE IS NO RESIDUAL POWER IN THE ENTIRE SYSTEM OF DEVICES. Every single tech in my office has their own rituals for reviving a dead mouse.

Fine! So everything is off, you must then unplug the mice and keyboards from the KVM and the computers, all of them, no cheating it wont work. Then wait two minutes. Bite the head off a live chicken and dribble the blood to bless the keyboard. The user's won't notice it amongst the accumulated ketchup drippings. A goat would work but there's too much blood.

Plug in the connection to the first computer, the one in the A position. Then to the box. Now apply power and dash a bit of salt over the mouse. If all goes well, the first computer's mouse and keyboard will come to life. Do the other computers just the same way in sequence. I promise it will work.

Unless you are connecting a laptop (or two!) up together. Yay! Because laptops have batteries that prevent you from removing all residual power from the box. Fuckin YAY! Sooo....before you wait two minutes you have to unplug the battery from the computer. That didn't work? Well did you hold down the grey button for 15 seconds and urinate on the power supply? I told you....gah! Okay well just remove the battery completely and power up without it. If that doesn't work, lets just replace the damn mouse.

I swear, a monkey could do my job.

Bellyaching

Alcohol gives me heartburn. I had 4 beers on Friday. I did not get heartburn on Friday.

Today I had orange juice. Today it hurts to breathe. Today everything tastes like orange juice. All I wanted was a glass of orange juice. Now I do not want to ever see orange juice again.

Honestly though, everything gives me heartburn.

I saw low-acid orange juice at the store last week, and the person with me couldn't understand why I was so excited. This week I will buy low-acid orange juice.

I bet it will give me heartburn.

The End.
